Marimekko is Finnish brand. It started in 1951 by Armi Ratia. Current designer is Anna Teurnell.
Marimekko, Mari is Finnish girls name, Mekko means skirt. So Marimekko means Mari’s skirt.
In 1951 , Armi Ratia and fashion designer Riitta Immonen founded Marimekko, whose purpose is to design and promote Printex fabrics. But Printex bankrupted in 1953 . The same year , Marimekko company hired designer Vuokko Nurmesniemi . And Armi Ratia engaged in a series of fashion shows , because Armi’s excellent public relations capacity , a fashion show in Finland caused a huge reaction , all the media were competing to interview this most successful Finnish designers.
After that Armi brought Marimekko to the Brussels World’s Fair , so that the world recognizes this unique Finnish fashion brand .
Marimekko got international fame in 1960 , when US President-elect lady Jacqueline Kennedy bought seven Marimekko dress and wearing a maroon Marimekko vest with her husband appeared on the cover of “Sports Illustrated” magazine. The whole world got crazy.
Many magazines competing reports Merimekko brand , such as : Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily and the New York Times. All these made Marimekko instant fame.
In 1964 , Marimekko launched a popular classic poppy design . Although Armi said never use floral pattern , but designer Malja Isola ignored boss , adhered to create this poppy pattern. And now this special floral fabrics becoming one of the representatives of printing Marimekko.
